BC has released a report highlighting the progress made to date on implementing the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
In 2019, BC unanimously passed the Declaration Act, becoming the first jurisdiction in Canada to officially pass legislation to adopt the Declaration.
Now, they say they have either completed or begun work on 32 of the 89 actions identified in last year’s implementation action plan.
Work to date has focused on: land, resource and wildlife management, education and training supports, child care, and self-determination.
But, progress has also been made to address discrimination in the justice system, and the disproportionate impact of the toxic drug crisis.
Along with the report, the Province is launching a new website which will provide detailed, on-going reporting of the plan’s progress.
