Port workers and employers returned to the negotiating table on Saturday after four-days away, but despite a new proposal, a deal remains elusive.
It’s day 10 of strike action by the International Longshore Workers Union, who represent more than 7,400 port workers province-wide.
When talks first broke down last Monday, members pinned it on disagreements over the excessive use of third party contractors.
Saturday’s talks included a new proposal from the BC Maritime Employers Association, which would expand the Union’s jurisdiction.
It would establish a joint Maintenance Review sub-committee which would create binding guidance on what constitutes regular maintenance work.
Should the work not fall under that scope, they would provide recommendations to help consider ILWU members for some or all tasks.
While the ILWU has yet to address that proposal publicly, they have declined the offer as rallies in support of the union continue across BC today.
