Prince Rupert residents looking to get a first-hand look at a traditional Polynesian voyaging canoe will have a chance to do just that today.
Hōkūle‘a stopped off at the port on Friday after two months in southeast Alaska, as part of a 47 month mission to connect Pacific communities.
That journey, known as Moananuiākea, is intended to amplify the vital importance of Earth’s oceans, nature, science, and Indigenous wisdom.
Together with Hikianalia, the journey will see Hōkūle‘a travel over 43,000 nautical miles, visiting 36 countries and over 100 Indigenous territories.
Residents can come down to the Cow Bay Breakwater by the Atlin Terminal to check out the vessel between 1:00 and 4:00 this afternoon.
Crew members will be giving a tour of the traditional, double-hulled, canoe, which is making its 15th major voyage in its first 50 years.
A send-off dinner will be held at the Nisga’a Hall at 5:00 for all to attend, with donations of food and drinks for the event being accepted on site.
