BC and Canada have signed a new agreement with the Haida Nation recognizing them as the inherent holders of title and rights on Haida Gwaii.
It will also see Ottawa formally recognize the Council of the Haida Nation as the Nation’s governing body, as outlined in their Constitution.
A ceremony was held today to usher in the Nang K̲’uula • Nang K̲’úulaas Recognition Agreement, which follows years of co-development.
It marks the first tripartite agreement reached under the GayGhalda Changing Tides Framework since its signing in 2021.
Signed by all three parties, the Framework lays out an incremental approach to negotiating reconciliation agreements.
Earlier this year BC introduced the Haida Nation Recognition Act to formally enable the framework in legislation.
Next steps are for the Federal Government to pass its own legislation to bring the newly signed agreement into full effect.
It will not impact existing or future legal arrangements or relationships with the Skidegate Band Council, Old Massett Village Council, or their members.
