Port workers in BC have resumed strike action after just five days away from the picket line.
Members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union had agreed to end their 13 day strike last week in light of a tentative settlement.
That came after months of federally mediated negotiations with the BC Maritime Employers Association failed to meet the Union’s demands.
With the strike disrupting more than $800 million in cargo each day, Federal Labour Minister Seamus O’Regan stepped in on July 13th.
He put forward a recommended settlement agreement, and gave both sides 24 hours to decide whether or not to pitch it to membership.
But after further review, the ILWU says that the recommendations fail to protect union member’s jobs now or in the future.
They say the agreement’s four year term is too long, and that it fails to address growing cost of living concerns.
Workers returned to the picket line at 4:30 this afternoon to resume their fight for a fair agreement.
