At least 1,228 individuals have lost their lives to illicit drug overdoses in BC through the first six months of 2023.
According to the most recent preliminary report from the Coroners’ Service, the toxic drug crisis claimed 184 lives in June, up from 157 last June.
That keeps BC on pace to surpass the record number of deaths recorded last year.
Northern Health continues to see the highest rates of deaths at 60 per 100,000 residents, after recording 15 deaths last month.
In the Northwest that jumps to 74.2 per 100,000, trailing only Vancouver, with Terrace seeing 157.9 deaths per 100,000 so far this year.
Fentanyl or its analogues were present in 90 percent of toxicology reports in June, and roughly 84 percent so far in 2023.
