A fresh $20 million provincial investment will help support the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant for the Village of Daajing Giids.
In addition to improving wastewater capacity in the community, the new plant will help to protect the health of residents and nearby ecosystems.
It will also ensure that Haida Nation members have safe access to fish and shellfish, and supports their aquaculture development in the area.
A commitment to improve ocean protections and marine management was part of the GayGhalda Changing Tides Framework, signed in 2021.
It also led to the signing of the Nang K’uula • Nang K’uulas Recognition Agreement yesterday.
That agreement formally recognizes the Haida Nation as title rights holders, and the Council of the Haida Nation as their governing body.
