It was a busy day in the world of port labour action yesterday, and the situation remains in flux heading into today.
Members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union called off a second 72-hour strike notice yesterday just hours after issuing it.
That came after members attempted to walk off the job for the second time this month on Tuesday, but the action was ruled illegal for lack of notice.
Prior to the renewed notice being called off, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened the Incident Response Group to discuss the situation.
Made up of cabinet members and advisors, the committee is only intended to be convened in the event of a national crisis.
Trudeau says he spoke with Premier David Eby, and confirmed the pair will continue to work together to protect Canada’s supply chain stability.
While many have called for back-to-work legislation, Eby says the move would not be a quick fix due to the current minority government in Ottawa.
Meanwhile, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra stated yesterday that his ministry has run out of patience with the situation.
