A national, three-digit, suicide prevention helpline will be available before the end of the year, thanks to fresh funding from Ottawa.
An investment of $156 million over the next three years will help the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health operate the 9-8-8 helpline.
Beginning on November 30th, residents will be able to dial 9-8-8 from anywhere in Canada to access trauma-informed, culturally appropriate supports.
Part of that funding will help the CAMH onboard over 40 existing organizations offering crisis line services.
That includes the BC Crisis Line Network, who can still be reached at 1 800 suicide, or 310-6789 in the meantime.
An additional $21.4 million investment will support capacity building at distress centres that are already part of the Talk Suicide Canada Network.
