Forestry workers in BC just can’t seem to catch a break, with Canfor postponing a decision on the redevelopment of their Houston Sawmill.
In January, Canfor announced plans to restructure their operations in light of uncertainty over the available long-term supply of residual fibre.
Those plans had included a temporary shutdown of the Houston mill in order to convert it into a value-added wood manufacturing facility.
But, while planning and technical work has now been completed, Canfor has been forced to delay a final investment decision on the project.
They say they are still working to assess the availability of an adequate supply of fibre to support the size of the investment.
Canfor is currently seeking assurances from the Province on the long-term fibre supply, and say they expect a conclusion in the coming weeks.
January’s restructuring also included the permanent shutdown of Chetwynd’s sawmill, and the pulp line at the Prince Georg Pulp and Paper mill.
