After two years of construction, traffic is finally flowing over the new Haisla Bridge in Kitimat.
Haisla Chief Councillor Crystal Smith, Elder Marilyn Furlan, and Mayor Phil Germuth christened the bridge with a ceremonial first trip this morning.
Mayor Germuth brought his mother along for the trip, as the group bid farewell to the 69 year-old structure of the original bridge over the river.
With the new, two-lane, bridge open as of 9:00 this morning, crews will now begin deconstructing the old structure.
Construction activities on the new structure are on-going, with drivers being asked to slow down and obey traffic controls and crews on the bridge.
Vehicles with loads of 63,000 kilograms or more will be prohibited from driving on the new bridge until August 8th.
After that, new traffic permit requirements will be put in place for oversized loads travelling on the bridge.
