While BC as a whole saw fewer reported crimes in 2022 than 2021, the same cannot be said for most of the Northwest.
Terrace saw a 6.6 percent rise in reported crimes over that time, with an 8.2 percent jump in Prince Rupert, and a 2.9 percent increase in Kitimat.
But the more troubling data from Statcan’s recent report is the rise in both the overall and violent crime severity index across the Province.
As a whole, BC noted a 3.6 percent increase in overall crime severity, and a 5.1 percent jump on the violent crime severity index.
Prince Rupert and Kitimat both saw overall severity increases of just under 8 percent, while Terrace’s index saw a leap of 16.4 percent.
In terms of violent crimes specifically, both Prince Rupert and Kitimat actually recorded drops of around 2 and 10 percent, respectively.
Terrace, meanwhile, recorded a more than 15 percent increase in their violent crime index in 2022.
