Forestry workers in the north are set to take another hit, with a Vanderhoof mill now planning to halve its operations this fall.
Sinclar Group Forest Products will be permanently cutting one of two sawmill and planer production shifts at Nechako Lumber Co on October 30th.
It will continue to operate on two shifts until the 27th, afterwhich the cuts will put 60 workers out of a job.
Similar to other curtailments which have struck the industry of late, Sinclar blames the cuts on the uncertainty around economic fibre supplies.
President Greg Stewart says the industry cuts are likely to continue until the government takes meaningful action to address fibre supply predictability.
He says Sinclar will work with employees and residents of Vanderhoof and the Saik’uz First Nation to make the transition as smooth as possible.
