Newcrest Gold’s continued failures to install electrical fencing around their Red Chris Mine have earned them an order to cease and remedy.
Located roughly 20 kilometres southeast of Iskut, the mine is in an area with a high potential for human-wildlife conflicts.
As a result, the Environmental Assessment Office ordered Newscrest to install electric fencing around their camps way back in 2019.
That order requires the fence to be operational around any facility containing wildlife attractants between April 1st and November 15th each year.
However, despite receiving three non-compliance warnings to date, Newcrest has yet to install adequate fencing.
Last month, officers once again inspected the site and found that it was still not within compliance.
