It includes new Clean Electricity Regulations, which aim to achieve net-zero in the electricity sector by 2035, and eliminate coal by 2030.
As it stands, electricity accounts for just 9 percent of Canada’s total emissions, with 84 percent coming from clean energy sources.
According to Environment Canada, the new regulations will reduce emissions by the equivalent of 342 megatonnes of carbon dioxide by 2050.
But, in order to meet those needs, the country will need to more than double their current electricity production over that time.
According to Ottawa, an estimated $400 billion in investments will be needed over the next quarter century to achieve their goals.
Under the plan, natural gas providers can continue to generate power past 2035, if they keep carbon emissions under 30 tonnes per gigawatt hour annually.
