Rio Tinto’s BC Works facility in Kitimat contributed $532 million to BC’s economy last year, according to their sustainability report.
Of that, roughly $253 million came through supply chain investments province-wide, with $127 million going to the Northwest specifically.
2022 also saw Rio Tinto invest $2.2 million in community investments, including $243,000 in Terrace and $148,000 in Kitimat.
Environmental contributions made up 44 percent of those investments, $862,000 of which went to initiatives in the Nechako Watershed.
Culture and heritage investments took the second highest chunk at 21 percent, including $530,000 towards Indigenous organizations.
