Three more First Nations in BC have signed new agreements to take back control over education on their lands.
Those agreements will give the Canim Lake Band, Ditidaht First Nation, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) Nation recognized legal authority over K to 12 education.
It comes just over a year after Ottawa established the First Nations Education Authority to assist Nations in developing their own systems.
Alongside that came the signing of the first four jurisdiction agreements by the Cowichan Tribes, and ʔaq̓am, Lil’wat, and Squamish Nations.
Each of them now also share the distinction of being the first Nations to complete a full school year under their own jurisdiction.
With the agreements signed, the new trio will now have say over teacher and school certification, graduation requirements, curriculum, and more.
