A new wastewater treatment system is in the works for Smithers despite funding delays.
Although the town has been working on the plans since 2020, they’ve finally decided to proceed with the detailed design process.
Town staff are aiming to have the design work done by the end of the year, which they say is at least 3 months behind schedule.
In total, the project is estimated to cost over $8 million, though the town is hoping for a Northern Capital and Planning Grant of over $2 million.
However, that grant approval has been delayed, resulting in the budget being forecasted to increase by 5 per cent.
Staff started work on preliminary planning in 2020, when they received notices stating that the systems effluent was no longer in regulatory compliance.
