A number of billboards will be installed along Highway 16 to commemorate Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 spirit people.
Between Prince Gorge and Smithers, billboards stating “We are hope, we are strength” and “Keep highway 16 safe” will be installed throughout the week.
Highway 16 was nicknamed the Highway of Tears due to the over 80 known missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls who had been travelling the stretch.
Those signs were created by both Carrier Sekani Family Services and the Highway of Tears Governing Body and will occupy their spots until 2025.
They’re part of a bigger commemorative series which will also see pillars erected at each end of the highway and more rest stop signage.
