BC’s first ever coastal marine strategy has received valuable feedback after extensive consultations.
Co-developed with First Nations, the province released the draft strategy for public feedback and received 900 submissions in response.
Those submissions were compiled into the What We Heard report for assessment, and show that 80 percent of respondents say the strategy is on the right track.
Some key issues the strategy focuses on include, protecting salmon populations, addressing marine pollution, including Indigenous knowledge in decision making and more.
However, the report states that people who depend on the ocean for livelihood practicing Treaty rights, were less inclined to agree.
Issues raised during public consultation include the impacts of shipping and vessel traffic, more pollution monitoring and enforcement, and calls for quicker implementation.
So far, the strategy is expected to be implemented in spring 2024, you can read the full What We Heard report here.
