A secured landfill for the Tervita Corporation has earned them four non-compliance orders from the Environmental Assessment Office.
Used to store hazardous materials generated from oil and gas activities, the site was inspected on June 27.
They were found to have not submitted annual reports to the EAO in 2021 and 2022, not treating potential contact water as leachate, not installing adequate fencing, and not giving the Doig River First Nation a tour.
The company has been instructed that any water in disposal cells or water that has contacted waste, is to be treated as leachate.
They’ve also been instructed to tour the Doig River First Nation, the EAO says they will continue to monitor the situation.
Failure to comply with the orders could result in a fine up to $1 million for the first time, and up to $2 million in subsequent failures.
