The provincial government is ringing in the new school year with a series of project announcements.
Included in that list, students at Prince Rupert Middle School will be learning in a safer environment with a new school.
Through $126.8 million from the province, the school will be rebuilt to meet modern safety standards and include a new neighbourhood learning centre.
The province expects that the new design will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50 percent.
In addition to that rebuild, the Gitwinsihlkw Elementary Gym has been completed.
Previously students could only access the shared facilities at the Ts’oohl Ts’ap Memorial Centre.
Now, they have easy access to their own gymnasium as well as an extra community space outside of school hours.
Those are two examples of several upgrades included in Budget 2023’s $3.4 billion allocated for school capital projects.
