The Indigenous Tourism Association of Canada has announced their plan to boost investment.
For their new Indigenous Tourism Destination Fund, the ITAC plans to raise $2.6 billion over the next 7 years with the help of the tourism industry.
So far, companies like WestJet, Airbnb, Coast to Coast Experiences, Rocky Mountaineer and seven Indigenous businesses have become early contributors to the fund.
They participate by establishing an optional fee for customers and guests to support the fund through a percentage or flat rate fee averaging 25 cents per transaction.
That fund is estimated to help the Indigenous tourism industry grow by 40 percent and support the development of 800 new businesses.
Along with more jobs, the fund could triple Indigenous tourism contributions to the GDP from approximately $1.9 billion to $6 billion by 2030.
