Members of the First Nations Leadership Council are condemning the City of Prince George for their decision to demolish a homeless encampment.
On Monday, City crews rolled in with heavy equipment to clear out the Millennium Park encampment, arresting three in the process.
It had been home to at least 30 full-time residents, over 70 percent of which identified as Indigenous, according to the Leadership Council.
Of those, they say just four have been provided housing, further reinforcing assertions that adequate shelter spaces do not exist in the city.
They also call the move senseless and dehumanizing, as more supportive housing planned for the coming months will likely forcing another move.
Members also say the move is an example of structural racism, bad faith negotiations, and political exploitation of the vulnerable.
Opponents also say the move contradicts a memorandum of understanding which compels the City to address the housing crisis humanely.
They are calling on the City to reverse their decision in favour of an evidence-based transition plan and good faith discussions.
