School Districts are hard at work to develop locally-focused Indigenous education courses as new provincial guidelines take effect.
This will be the first school year in which Grade 12 students are required to take an Indigenous-focused course in order to graduate.
So far, the province has developed 10 full courses, and 20 First Nations language courses which schools can utilize to meet the requirements.
But, the Districts are also working with local Nations to develop courses which incorporate local knowledge, traditions, and practices.
Until then, Elders will be brought in to help add local context to the available provincial courses.
BC is also working with First Nations to develop their own K to 12 curriculums and take back educational jurisdiction on their lands.
Last year, the first four Nations to sign jurisdiction agreements completed their first year under their own curriculums, and three more are set to join them this year.
