BC’s NDP are rolling back their drug decriminalization plan slightly, after facing heavy calls to do so in the months since its introduction.
Since then, they have received significant backlash from municipal leaders and opposition MLAs regarding rampant drug use in public spaces.
They had cited an abundance of needles and drug paraphernalia in parks and playgrounds, and the public use of drugs within sight of children.
Now, the government has received permission to amend the decriminalization policy to exclude certain areas.
Beginning next Monday, possession of illegal drugs within 15 metres of playgrounds, spray or wading pools, and skate parks will be illegal once again.
They’ll be added to the existing list of locations exempted from the policy, including K to 12 schools and child care facilities.
More legislation to further regulate public drug use is expected to be introduced this Fall.
