Farmers in Northern BC are selling off their flocks at record rates as the province grapples with the impacts of an on-going drought.
For months, the Bulkley Lakes and both Upper Fraser basins have been sitting at level 5 drought conditions, the most severe stage on the scale.
As a result, hay production north of Williams Lake has dwindled to as little as 10 percent of last year’s harvest, leaving many struggling to feed their livestock.
In July, Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach wrote to the former Minister of Agriculture to call for financial support from Ottawa.
While the Province has since made their willingness to work with Ottawa on a solution clear, the Federal Government has yet to commit.
Bachrach is again calling on the new Minister, Lawrence MacCaulay to provide urgent funding to source hay from other regions.
