As wildfires steal headlines in the area, a community forest in the Bulkley Valley is launching a new risk-reduction project.
For the past several years, the Wetzin’kwa Community Forest Corporation have been working diligently to mitigate wildfire risks in the area.
Now, with fresh funding from the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, they will work to build a shaded fuel break along Hudson Bay Mountain Road.
By connecting residents of Smithers, Telkwa and Witset with surrounding recreation, the road serves as a crucial transportation corridor.
But the area around the road also supports a diverse range of ecosystems, serving as a home for grizzlies, and the rare whitebark pine.
Work in the area will see crews chop down some trees while leaving some standing to create a shaded area to reduce heat.
With the continued help of the FESBC and a Wet’suwet’en contractor, the project will last for several years, targetting previously identified high-priority areas.
