A flag commemorating and honouring residential school survivors and those who never returned home has been raised in Victoria.
In honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation this Saturday, a ceremony was held at the BC Legislative building this morning.
It brought together politicians and Indigenous leaders from across BC to raise the Survivors’ Flag above the provincial government headquarters.
While the building has often served as a place of oppression for First Nations, the flag will bring a symbol of equality and inclusivity to the grounds.
Union of BC Indian Chiefs President, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, called the moment historic, and a chance to inspire equal treatment for all.
An ornate bowl filled with water gathered from numerous Nations was presented and blessed by Elders prior to the flag being raised.
It will fly at the Legislature through sundown on Saturday, when Ottawa and numerous municipalities across Canada will raise their own.
