In terms of area burned, the 2023 wildfire season has been the worst on record in BC for months, but it is now also officially the most expensive.
Estimated costs to battle the 2.5 million hectares worth of fires now sit at $770 million, over $100 million more than 2017’s previous record.
But rainy weather over the past few days has given crews hope that relief may be on the way as over 360 wildfires continue to rage.
Evacuation orders have been reduced but remain in place around Lucas Lake southwest of Fort Fraser, and around Tatuk Lake south of Vanderhoof.
North of there, orders also remain for the Great Beaver Lake and Noonlang Lake areas west of Highway 97 and east of Fort St James.
An alert has replaced an order where the Nadina River meets Francois Lake, and alerts remain south of Houston, and around Marilla on the north side of Ootsa Lake.
An alert also remains for the area around the Omineca Provincial Park, stretching south to Highway 27.
