A new program launched by the District of Kitimat aims to address the underrepresentation of Indigenous peoples in municipal government.
Earlier this year, the District applied for an equity-enhancing program with the BC Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.
That application, which has now been approved through 2028, was made with the support of both the Haisla Nation and Unifor Local 2300.
It allows them to give hiring preference to qualified residents who self-identify as Indigenous when applying for jobs posted by the District.
Haisla Nation Chief Councillor Crystal Smith calls the program a vital step towards fostering meaningful relationships, understanding, and unity with the District.
Other organizations in the community are also being encouraged to apply for the program, with application support being offered by the District.
Those looking to get support can reach out to the District’s Director of Human Resources and Labour Relations.
