Manitoba has become the first Province in Canada to elect a First Nations candidate as premier.
Wab Kinew, who is from the Ojibways of Onigaming First Nation, nabbed a majority victory for his NDP in yesterday’s provincial election.
They downed the reigning Conservatives after securing at least 30 of the Province’s 57 seats, with some yet to report final tallies.
Initially elected to legislature in 2016, Kinew, who had gained fame for his work as a CBC reporter, was selected to lead the party in 2017.
While the Territories have elected Indigenous Premiers in the past, Kinew’s new posting will make him the first in any of the 10 provinces.
