Ottawa is providing funding to help advance the search of a Manitoba landfill for the bodies of three murdered Indigenous women.
Those calls came after a feasibility study conducted in May determined that it would cost $184 million to perform the search, though it was possible.
Friends and family believe the landfill to contain the remains of Morgan Harris, Marcedes Myran and a third unidentified victim known as Buffalo Woman.
All three are believed to have been killed by alleged serial killer Jeremy Skibicki, who is currently facing related third-degree murder charges.
Despite that, the previous Manitoba Conservative Government had refused to search the landfill, citing costs and health risks.
But, with the province electing their first First Nations Premier yesterday in Wab Kinew, that could change.
Ottawa has now provided $740,000 to the Long Plain First Nation to determine the scope of a search and gain further details on how a search would be conducted.
