A mining company appears to be moving ahead with efforts to acquire investors in a new mine, despite the opposition of the Tl’azt’en Nation.
FPX Nickel Corp is looking to bring a new mine to Tselk’un, also known as Mount Sydney Williams, located on the Nation’s territory.
Last month, they issued a pair of press releases promoting investment in exploration activities at the site.
But, those releases failed to mention that the Nation had terminated a Memorandum of Understanding with the company in July.
They say they do not consent to nor support the work FPX is conducting on their lands, and oppose any mining operation in the area.
While the Nation entered into the MOU in 2012, they say increasing concerns over the well-being of the land and their people prompted its termination.
They say a fully functioning mine in the area would cause irreversible harm to the lands and waters, and damage cultural security.
