Construction is set to begin shortly on a new library in Masset which will incorporate and support traditional Haida culture and knowledge.
Permits were issued to the Vancouver Island Regional Library earlier this week to allow for the construction of a new facility on Haida Gwaii.
Covering over 3,800 square feet, the new library will feature a roof pitch, timber beams, and vertical cedar siding in honour of Haida culture.
It will include a Haida language immersion lab, which will include virtual and interactive programming developed by the Xaad Kíl Née.
In addition, the library will feature a learning space focused on knowledge transfer through technology, a cozy fireplace lounge area, bookable meeting rooms, and more.
In total, the project will cost $4.2 million, covered partially by grants from the Gwaii Trust and Northern Development Initiative Trust.
A timeline for construction is currently being developed, but it is expected to begin before the end of the year.
