Skeena MLA Ellis Ross was among a number of BC United members to press for solutions to on-going emergency room closures yesterday.
Ross rose in Legislature to ask the Premier why, despite seven years of promises to fix the system, it appears to be getting worse, not better.
He pointed towards a string of recent ER closures at hospitals in Smithers, New Hazelton, and Kitimat, and a disturbing situation in Williams Lake.
On Monday, a sign was posted at the Cariboo Memorial Hospital which read: “The emergency room is closed unless patient is imminently dying, sorry for the inconvenience.”
But Health Minister Adrian Dix says that the hospital was never actually closed, and that he is investigating why it was put up.
In response to the situation in the Northwest, Dix pointed to the NDP’s training, retention, and recruitment policies, as ways they are tackling the issue.
He also noted the new hospital on the way in Terrace as an example of their efforts to solve the crisis.
