A new roundabout in Prince Rupert will improve safety on the roads, but could also inadvertently lead to the development of affordable housing.
Planned for Highway 16 at the intersection with McBride Street and 2nd Avenue, construction of the roundabout is expected to begin next Spring.
Once completed, it will improve traffic flows for both drivers and pedestrians, offering a safer alternative to the current three way intersection.
Construction of the roundabout will be funded through an $18 million investment from the Province, who will also work with the City to improve utilities and transit infrastructure.
But its development will also result in an under-utilized parcel of land owned by the Province, which could be used to develop affordable housing.
Ministry officials will review the site to determine its suitability while the new roundabout is in development.
