Continual water main repairs continue to exhaust city crews and funding in Prince Rupert as they await word on Federal support.
Crews have begun backfilling holes on 7th Avenue East in order to allow them to move onto repairs needed in other areas.
That will allow them to re-open roadways to improve local traffic access, but the roads will not be repaved until the pipes can be fully replaced.
If crews were to begin replacing piping in the areas noted in their grant application, they would lose all eligibility for Federal funding.
Earlier this year, the City identified 26 kilometres of water and sewer mains which were in critical need of replacement.
To date, they have acquired $65 million in Provincial funding, and gained approval to borrow another $45 million to go toward the project.
But they are still waiting on the approval of $82 million in funding from Ottawa before they can begin the repairs in earnest, which will then take at least three years.
Crews plan to move onto interim repairs in the Frederick and Kootnay areas in the coming days.
