Members of the Lax Kw’alaams Band are gathering today to welcome the start of construction on a new 70-unit housing development.
Located at 830 11th Avenue East in Prince Rupert, the complex will be built and operated by the Band’s wholly-owned WAAP Housing Society.
Originally proposed by the Society in 2020, the project received final approval from City Council a year later.
Residents were initially torn on the project, but the City lauded the developer’s efforts to mitigate concerns brought forward by the public.
A groundbreaking ceremony at the site was initially planned for today, but the Band will instead be hosting a construction kick-off celebration at their Community Hall in Prince Rupert.
It will get underway at noon and wrap up at 2:00, with additional ferry sailings scheduled today to help members get to and from the event.
