A Prince George RCMP officer involved in the death of an Indigenous man in 2020 has been cleared of wrong-doing by the BC Prosecution Service.
Police were initially called out to E and I Sports on April 12th of that year for reports of a break and enter.
Hours after arriving on scene, officers would fire tear gas into the store, before sending in a police service dog to nab the suspect.
Everett Patrick, of the Lake Babine Nation, would later be arrested, after being pulled down by the dog and struck be an officer, before his head collided with the ground.
He would be sent to hospital, where he would be medically cleared for custody before being taken back to the detachment.
But, Patrick was later found in medical distress in his cell, and would later pass away from a brain hemorrhage prompted by blunt force trauma.
In the decision, the Prosecution Service said that the officer’s actions after Patrick fell did not constitute a breach in the standard of care.
It notes that he was cleared at the hospital, and that he did not exhibit immediate signs of a change in consciousness.
