A new partnership aims to reduce diesel fuel consumption and carbon emissions on Tahltan territory using an innovative new approach.
It will see the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation team up with Solvest, a renewable energy provider, to rent out solar power infrastructure.
Under the partnership, the TNDC will invest in redeployable solar assets and lease them to mining companies on their territory.
Their first installation will be at the Schaft Creek mine, operated by Teck Resources, who have entered into a 3-year lease agreement.
It is estimated that a solar array and battery set-up at the project’s work camp will bring an 80 percent reduction in carbon emissions.
But it will also bring significant cost savings to the project, and produce far less noise than the diesel generators currently in use at the site.
Solvest and the TNDC will continue to identify other projects which can make use of the assets.
