Construction has begun on a new townhouse complex in Prince Rupert which will bring much-needed housing for members of the Gitxaała Nation.
Located at the former Harbour View Gardens site at 1414 Kootney Avenue, the new complex will bring 20 units of affordable rental housing to town.
Units will be spread across four two-storey buildings, featuring two, three, and four bedroom homes to accommodate families both large and small.
Operated by the Prince Rupert Indigenous Housing Society, the units will be offered to low and moderate income Gitxaała families.
Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2025, with a total price tag of just over $16 million.
$1.8 million of that comes from Ottawa, with the province providing the remainder through BC Housing.
