Several years of illegal dumping on their Zymoetz Reserve has the Kitselas First Nation pleading for more responsible recreational use.
Better known as Copper Flats, the area encompasses land both east and west of the Copper River Bridge, and is a popular recreation site.
But over the years the Nation has had to undergo extensive efforts to remove garbage, industrial materials, abandoned vehicles, and squatters.
In an effort to limit access, concrete barriers and signage was installed to disuade vehicles larger than ATVs and side-by-sides from entering.
Despite those efforts, the issues have persisted, and the Nation is warning of more severe restrictions should they continue.
They are asking visitors not to move or remove the barriers, responsibly dispose of all waste brought into the site, and to report illegal dumping or access to the RAPP line at 1 877 951 7277.
Visitors are being asked to adopt a “leave no-trace” mentality to ensure the integrity and beauty of the area is maintained.
