Most roads in Prince Rupert which had been closed to allow for emergency water main repairs have now been re-opened for local traffic.
Crews must wait on the approval of an $82 million federal grant before they can begin paving work, or they will risk losing funding eligibility.
Interim repairs on 7th Avenue East and 3rd Avenue East were completed over the past week, and Frederick Street has now joined them in reopening.
Work is still underway in the Kootney area, the final section of road which has yet to be re-opened.
While that work may be close to wrapping up, the situation surrounding the city’s deteriorating water infrastructure remains critical.
Mayor Herb Pond says that a valve break near the reservoir from earlier this week had the system closer than ever to a complete collapse.
It led to a boil water notice which remains in place for the whole city.
