Safeway employees have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement which will avoid a strike at locations across BC.
Grocery and FreshCo Pharmacy employees represented by UFCW Local 1518 opted to ratify the new agreement after a two day vote last week.
They had previously voted 98 percent in favour of authorizing a strike, after months of negotiations failed to net an adequate pay raise.
But the new agreement will net workers their highest wage increase in more than 25 years, with adjustments retroactive to April of this year.
It will also open up 300 new full-time jobs, install an improved wage scale where no worker is frozen at minimum wage, and garner a $2 premium for night shift work.
Deli, meat, and seafood department workers are not covered under the agreement, and are continuing to negotiate through UFCW Local 247.
