A portion of the waters around Kitimat have been opened for the harvesting of certain mollusks for Haisla Nation members only.
Sections of the DFO’s Area 6 have now been opened for the food, social, or ceremonial harvesting of Cockles and Butter Clams.
It comes following what the DFO describes as acceptable biotoxin monitoring results in the area.
A description of the open area will be posted at the Haisla Band Office, and open areas are outlined in the Community Harvest Plan.
Harvesters must hold a valid food harvesting permit from the Band, and must report all harvest quantities to the Haisla Fisheries Program.
Those who are not a member of the Nation could face significant fines if caught harvesting in the region.
