New legislation introduced by the Province today aims to give Indigenous families more say over their childrens’ education.
If approved, the amendments to the School Act would fulfill commitments in the Declaration Act Action Plan and Tripartite Education Agreement.
Proposed changes to the Act would take a distinctions-based approach to improving education outcomes among Indigenous students.
They would ensure that First Nations have the option to apply a model Local Education Agreement with their local board of education.
Through such agreements, boards will work collaboratively with Nations to support students and build Nation-specific education models.
Boards would also be required to establish Indigenous Education Councils to ensure Indigenous residents have input on education services.
In addition, the amendments would install a school-of-choice provision for First Nations students living on reserve, self-governing, or Treaty lands.
They must still go through the House before the changes become law.
