Rio Tinto Alcan announced funding of 135 million dollars to go towards the Kitimat Plant, the funding will be used to go towards replacing the 69 year old alumina conveyor.
This is the most substantial investment the Plant has received since the modernization project a decade ago, and the conveyor is in need of replacing as it has never been replaced or upgraded since the smelters opening almost 70 years ago and is at the end of its functional life and the new system should last 50 years
The conveyor serves as the conduit, and is essential for transporting 800 thousand tons of raw alumna per year. This investment will also greatly reduce maintenance and enhance environmental protections by preventing spills and controlling dust emissions.
