There is a move afoot by the BC United Party to get cell phones out of classrooms, party leader Kevin Falcon says BC should be following the lead of Quebec who banned the phone last week right through grade 12. Students may possess a phone, but it is stored in a lock during classes. There is a debate however over whether or not taking phones out of the classroom will be a benefit or a hindrance to students.
Falcon says students need as few distractions as possible in order to be better able to pay close attention to whatever subject they may be studying.
On the other hand there are those who say with a lack of computers in classrooms, smart phones take their place and therefore are a useful tool.
There is no doubt that we as a nation are wired to our cell phones. Some experts go so far as to say it’s an addiction that’s hard to shake while others say they feel naked without their phone in their hand no matter where they may be. There is no argument that the phones are a huge distraction whether they are in a classroom.
Falcon says if the liberals form the next government they will ban the phones and he suggests the Eby government look into the issue as well, but so far the government says they are looking at what Quebec has done, but as it stands school districts have the authority to ban the phones so there may not be a need for the government to step in.
