The Village of Hazelton and the City of Smithers recently received provincial funding for flood mitigation projects announced by MLA Nathan Cullen.
During 2021-2023, BC has saw some of the worst flooding in its history; the Village of Hazelton is located at the meeting point of the Bulky and Skeena River and suffered flooding and resulted in evacuations.
The $6.4 million dollar grant to Hazelton will reconstruct two dikes and build a new dike to help protect against flooding, according to Cullen, and the $2.3 million to Smithers for a riverbank erosion stabilization project will protect the only road access to the waist-water treatment facility.
Cullen talked with CFNR about what this funding means to the local areas. The money was given to the communities last year, but the announcement was delayed due to the wildfires and other climate emergencies.
